Boss Proud Of United Display

Alan Pardew believes Newcastle United displayed their spirit and commitment in recording a 1-1 draw away at Sunderland on Sunday - playing 65 minutes with just ten men.

The Magpies were already one up thanks to Yohan Cabaye's early strike when central midfield partner Cheick Tiote was given a straight red card for a late challenge on Steven Fletcher.

But the visitors failed to be daunted by their numerical disadvantage, more than matching the Black Cats every step of the way at the Stadium of Light.

Only a late, unfortunate Demba Ba own goal prevented United from claiming all three points, but Pardew could not have been more proud of his troops - and not just the players.

"We were five minutes away from getting one of the best victories ever at this place," the boss told nufcTV following the final whistle.

"What a performance. We started with 11 men, bossed the game, got the goal and were looking like us at our best.

"Unfortunately we then got the sending off, which was a bit harsh but we accept it.

"And then it's a different side. You've then got to show your character and desire and what it means to you.

"And as much as it means a lot to our fans - which we know - we wanted to show how much it meant to us too, as players and staff. And we did that today.

"We had black and white running through our bodies today."

Tiote is set to miss Newcastle's next three Premier League fixtures following his dismissal, and Pardew admitted the Club are unlikely to appeal referee Martin Atkinson's decision.

"I think we will have to accept the decision," he said.

"He (Tiote) hasn't intentionally done the guy, that's for sure. He's just gone for the ball and is a little bit high.

"I'm very disappointed to have lost Cheick because he's a very important player for us."
