Gilliead's England Call-Up

Written by Newcastle Utd

Young striker Alex Gilliead has been called up for the England under-17 squad for three European Championship qualifiers this month

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Magpies youngster Alex Gilliead has been added to the England under-17 squad for three European Championships qualifiers in Estonia later this month.

The 15-year-old forward, from Consett, has previously played for his country at under-16 level in the Victory Shield and Montaigu Tournament but this is his first call-up at the next age group.

He will meet up with John Peacock's young Lions squad at St. George's Park this week before the matches against Estonia (Sunday, 21st October), Wales (Tuesday, 23rd October) and Northern Ireland (Friday, 26th October) in Tallinn.

Gilliead - a late replacement - joins his club colleague Freddie Woodman in the squad. The goalkeeper has already won two caps at under-17 level, keeping two clean sheets at the Nordic Tournament in August.

Woodman also played for England under-16s in last month's 5-0 Victory Shield win over Northern Ireland, as did Newcastle's Adam Armstrong.

And defender Kyle Cameron was last week called up for the under-16s' next Victory Shield match, against Wales in November.
