Carver: 'We're Going There To Win'

John Carver insists Newcastle are going to Old Trafford on Wednesday night looking to win - and then compete for silverware.

The Capital One Cup third round tie against Manchester United will be the Magpies' fourth game in the space of nine days, with a long trip to Madeira included, and that means Alan Pardew could be forced to reshuffle his pack once more.

But Assistant Manager Carver is adamant that United won't take the match - or the competition - lightly, with Fabricio Coloccini, Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse all expected to play a part alongside less tried and tested names like Romain Amalfitano and James Tavernier.

As a lifelong Newcastle supporter and former player, Carver knows just how long the club has waited since its last trophy - the Fairs Cup in 1969 - and he told nufc.co.uk: "It's another football match that you want to go and win.

"It's a cup competition where you might have a chance of winning the competition so you've got to go prepared for it.

"We'll not do anything different; we'll do what we always do and we'll prepare for the game and let's see what result we can bring back with us."

Last week saw the Europa League meeting with Maritimo sandwiched between Barclays Premier League fixtures away to Everton and at home to Norwich, while a trip to Reading will follow three days after the cup clash at Old Trafford.

But Carver - who will be joined in the dugout by Pardew on Wednesday after the manager's touchline ban ended over the weekend - has urged the players to put any thoughts of heavy legs out of their minds and simply concentrate on overcoming Manchester United.

"The games are coming thick and fast but you can't start thinking two, three or four games ahead," he said.

"It's a cliche, but you've just got to look after the next one."
