Willie Donachie has sent a 'get well soon' message to young gun Michael Richardson after the player suffered an ankle ligament injury while playing for the Reserves on Tuesday night.
After 70 minutes of the 2-2 Barclays Under-21 Premier League draw at the Sports Direct Arena, the 20-year-old was stretchered off to be replaced by Yven Moyo and left the stadium on crutches.
He missed a chunk of last season with a similar injury - albeit it to his other ankle - and Reserve Team Manager Donachie hopes to see the former electrician back in action sooner rather than later.
Although a box-to-box midfielder by nature, Richardson had been pressed into service alongside Curtis Good in central defence for the match against the Black Cats.
"Michael had been outstanding again at the back," Donachie told nufc.co.uk.
"He plays anywhere, in any position. He's wholehearted and gives everything he's got, he's very honest and he was doing fantastically well until he got injured.
"Playing in a position that he's not used to is unselfish for the team and it's a shame.
"Hopefully it's not too bad. His ankle's quite swollen but hopefully it's not too bad."
