Strong Second-String Squad For Sunderland

Written by Newcastle Utd

Five players with first-team experience, including Shane Ferguson, Dan Gosling and Sammy Ameobi, will play for the Reserves against Sunderland

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Shane Ferguson, Dan Gosling, Sammy Ameobi, Mehdi Abeid and Adam Campbell are all included in a strong Newcastle United Reserve squad to face Sunderland on Tuesday night (kick-off 7pm).

It's derby day at the Sports Direct Arena and with local pride at stake, Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley have named a side they believe can win the game following Friday night's 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

And with a packed schedule ahead for Alan Pardew's first-team, it's vital that the club's fringe players are able to maintain their match fitness. Gosling was an unused substitute in the 2-2 draw against his former employers Everton on Monday night while Ferguson is recently back from injury.

Ameobi continues his comeback from a hamstring problem, having played 90 minutes on Friday, while Abeid and Campbell will be looking to add to their senior appearances in the weeks ahead.

Summer signing Curtis Good is also involved, as is Bradden Inman who hit a hat-trick against Stoke's second-string two weeks ago.

Last season's fixture on Tyneside saw an entertaining 3-3 draw with Gosling, Gabriel Obertan and Ryan Donaldson on target. Admission is free for season ticket holders and Members on production of their cards, otherwise it's £3 for adults and £1 concessions. Entry is via the East Stand turnstiles.

The squad is: Jak Alnwick, Jonathan Mitchell, Alex Nicholson, Curtis Good, Michael Riley, Yven Moyo, Shane Ferguson, Mehdi Abeid, Michael Richardson, Conor Newton, Bradden Inman, Marcus Maddison, Sammy Ameobi, Dan Gosling, Adam Campbell, JJ Hooper
