Nicholson's Night Despite Debut Defeat

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle youngster Alex Nicholson made his debut for Wales under-19s in Germany on Monday evening

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Teenage full-back Alex Nicholson made his debut for Wales under-19s on Monday night in a friendly against Germany.

But the 18-year-old - who has been with Newcastle since the age of 13 - was on the losing side in Kiel as Geraint Williams' side warmed up for European Under-19 Championships qualifiers against Slovenia, Sweden and Russia.

Liverpool's Samed Yesil gave the hosts the lead but George Williams equalised for the Welsh - only for Fabien Schnellhardt to restore the Germans' advantage on the stroke of half-time.

An own goal from Curtis Strong ended the scoring but it was still a proud evening for Nicholson, who has previously played for his country at under-16 and under-17 level and played the whole match.

The Academy graduate was born in Newcastle but qualifies for Wales through his grandfather.
