Phil Dowd has been appointed as the referee for Newcastle's next Barclays Premier League match at Chelsea.

The Magpies travel to Stamford Bridge less than 48 hours after taking on Greek side Atromitos in the fourth qualifying round of the Europa League and Dowd will be the man in the middle for the 5.30pm kick-off.

Dowd was involved in two of United's most memorable matches in recent years, officiating the famous 5-1 win over Sunderland and the 4-4 draw with Arsenal, both in 2010/11.

Last term he refereed the 0-0 draw against Queens Park Rangers, the away victory at Blackburn and the home win over Norwich. He was also chosen to referee last season's FA Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Dowd will be assisted by Scott Ledger and Harry Lennard, which Chris Foy serving as the fourth official.
