Freddie Woodman

Young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman made his England debut on Monday - and kept a clean sheet in a Three Lions victory.

The 15-year-old was named in the starting XI for England under-17s' opening game of the Nordic Tournament against hosts the Faroe Islands.

And although he had little to do in Klaksvik as England won 2-0 thanks to goals from Middlesbrough's Bradley Fewster and Aston Villa's Danny O'Brien, he will nonetheless have been delighted with a shut-out to go with his first cap.

Woodman, who helped Newcastle reach the final of the Milk Cup last month, had previously been called up by England at under-16 level but although he was part of the squad which won this year's Victory Shield, he didn't play at that age group.

The teenager - who played in a friendly for United's Reserves against York last season at the age of just 14 - will now hope to win a second cap against Finland on Tuesday, although coach Kenny Swain has hinted that he will choose a different line-up.
