Newcastle United played out a goalless draw in a pre-season friendly away at ADO Den Haag on Saturday afternoon.
The Magpies largely dominated proceedings, in terms of both possession and goalscoring opportunities, but were unable to find a way through a stubborn home defence.
Papiss Cisse went closest for Alan Pardew's men, when he saw a second half header cleared off the line, while Shola Ameobi had a goal ruled out for offside.
Demba Ba and Gabriel Obertan also threatened, while at the other end it took almost until the final minute before goalkeeper Tim Krul was properly called into action.
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90 mins: That's it, it's all over and finishes goalless. Not a classic by any means but Newcastle will be happy with a clean sheet and the amount of chances created, even if none were taken.
87 mins: Krul finally has a meaningful save to make and it's taken 87 minutes. The ball finds its way to Den Haag substitute Charlton Vicento towards the left-hand side of the area and the forward strikes a rising drive that United's keeper has to palm down and then gather at the second attempt.
86 mins: The game looks to be heading for a stalemate, so Bigirimana attempts to liven things up by trying his luck from 30 yards. It's optimistic and ends up being simple for Coutinho.
82 mins: Two further substitutions are made by Pardew, meaning all their outfield replacements are now on the pitch. Danny Simpson and Romain Amalfitano are the final duo to take to the playing surface, with Ba and Santon making way.
79 mins: United have the ball in the back of the net and start to celebrate, but the linesman's flag curtails their joy. Bigirimana swings a free-kick towards the far post, where four Newcastle players look to have broken the offside trap. One of them, Williamson, nods back across the face of goal to give Ameobi a simple tap-in, only to see it immediately chalked off.
71 mins: It's a triple change now for the Magpies, with Shola Ameobi, Gael Bigirimana and James Perch entering the fray in place of Obertan, Cheick Tiote and Ryan Taylor. The substitutions mean a change in formation for the visitors. Santon switches to right-back, with Gutierrez dropping in at left full-back. Perch takes up a role in the middle of the park, and there is a front three of Ameobi, Ba and Cisse.
64 mins: Pardew takes his first roll of the dice just past the hour mark. Dan Gosling and Mike Williamson are introduced for Haris Vuckic and Steven Taylor.
62 mins: Den Haag survuve by the skin of their teeth, thanks to a fantastic goalline clearance. Cisse rose highest at the far post to power Ryan Taylor's corner goalwards, only to see Tjaronn Chery perfectly placed to head away from under his own crossbar.
60 mins: A painful moment for Ryan Taylor who, in blocking a cross from substitute Elbers, takes one in a place where no man wants to. The father of one is clearly feeling a little tender but is helped back to his feet after taking a moment to catch his breath.
55 mins: It's another Obertan shot, and again from distance. This one is much more controlled, having been found by Ba 25 yards out and pretty central. It is always rising though and ends up not causing home stopper Coutinho any problems.
48 mins: First goalscoring chance of the half falls to Newcastle and Obertan, but the winger slices his 20 yard effort well off target.
46 mins: United boss Alan Pardew makes no changes at the break, but his Den Haag counterpart Maurice Steijn makes a trio of substitutions. Charlton Vicento, Stanley Elbers and Christian Supusepa replace Danny Holla, Jens Toornstra and Mike van Duinen.
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45 mins: Referee Pieter Vink whistles for half-time and both teams head back to the changing rooms, with the Magpies knowing they could easily be out of sight by now, had things gone their way in the final third.
39 mins: Obertan is looking really sharp here at the Kyocera Stadium and robs a defender before drilling a cross right through the six-yard box. It's begging for the slightest of touches which would surely put it in the back of the net, but doesn't get it.
36 mins: It's another corner to Alan Pardew's side. This time, Ba works himself a yard of space on the left before laying the ball into Obertan's path on the edge of the area. The Frenchman, however, is thwarted by Wormgoor's excellent block as he pulls the trigger.
31 mins: For all their possession and clear chances, Newcastle almost concede a really soft goal. A long ball towards the left sees Mike van Duinen out-muscle Ryan Taylor in the air and then seize upon the loose ball. He takes an early shot, attempting a lob over Krul, but shanks his effort wide.
24 mins: Best opening of the match so far. Ryan Taylor's left-wing corner isn't cleared properly and the ball falls to Gabriel Obertan around 15 yards out. The winger doesn't take a second thought and connects with a superb volley which is heading towards the bottom corner until Den Haag keeper Gino Coutinho manages to get his body in the way.
22 mins: Another United chance following a spell of short, tidy passing. The ball is eventually worked out to the right, where Ryan Taylor floats in a delivery, only for Haris Vuckic to flick a header off target. The youngster was under pressure, but did well to make it into the final third, having helped start the move deep in his own half.
19 mins: The visitors hit back immediately. First, Papiss Cisse is denied when he slides in at the far post to meet Santon's deep cross, and then - from the resulting corner - Ba can only power a header over the top.
17 mins: An intelligent pass from Jens Toornstra disects the Magpies' defence and front man Rydell Poepon is racing after it. However, Krul is quickly off his line to avert the danger.
13 mins: Jonas Gutierrez has just been clattered by Vito Wormgoor out on the left touchline. The referee gives a free-kick and, worryingly, Gutierrez stays down, but after 30 seconds is back on his feet and soon into his normal stride again.
10 mins: Home left-back Aaron Meijers finds himself in some space and gallops down the flank. He decides to send a cross into the danger zone but gets it horribly wrong and the ball flies harmlessly into the stand behind.
9 mins: Krul has had an easy opening period against his boyhood club, with the Dutch international so far having only had to deal with a couple of back passes and stray crosses.
5 mins: United seem intent to pass the ball out from the back, and after some patient build-up play doing just that Santon bombs forward but sees his low centre cut-out before it can reach Demba Ba on the edge of the area.
2 mins: Den Haag force an early corner, when Davide Santon plays captain Fabricio Coloccini into trouble on the left-hand side, but the full back makes up for his error by heading clear the flag kick.
1 min: We're underway here at the Kyocera Stadium, with hosts Den Haag in an eye-catching kit of yellow and green striped shirts, green shorts and yellow socks. Newcastle are in their traditional black and white-striped shirts, with black shorts and socks. Den Haag kick off, and will be heading towards the 200-odd United fans behind Tim Krul's goal.
