Tim Krul knows he cannot afford to let his standards drop for a second this pre-season, with two good goalkeepers breathing down his neck.
The 24-year-old was outstanding last term in his maiden year as United's first choice stopper, keeping 15 clean sheets and earning a spot in Holland's Euro 2012 squad in the process.
But, having returned to join his teammates on their pre-season tour of Germany earlier this week, Krul admits the hard work cannot stop here, and that the performances of Rob Elliot and Steve Harper in the Magpies' two friendlies to date prove he will have to be on top of his game once more.
"It was a fantastic season last year, but the second season is always harder," Krul told nufc.co.uk.
"And I've got to be on my toes because I've still got Robbie and Harps behind me, who are two very good goalkeepers. There is no way I can be complacent.
"There's going to be a few busy weeks this season so I need a good pre-season, that's for sure.
"It will be an exciting season though. We've got a good squad and we will be ready for whatever is thrown at us."
