Alan Smith has signed for League One side MK Dons on a permanent basis after agreeing a two-year deal with the Milton Keynes outfit.
The former Newcastle captain was released by United last month having spent the second half of last season on loan with the Dons, who narrowly missed out on promotion via the play-offs.
Smith, 31, joined the Magpies from Manchester United in 2007 and made 94 appearances in all competitions - 35 of which came in 2009/10 when he made a huge contribution to the Championship-winning season and skippered the side on several occasions.
The ex-England man - who played 19 times for his country and scored one goal - made only two appearances for Newcastle last term and joined MK Dons in January. Often playing behind the front two, he scored twice in 18 games.
He is the latest player of the 11 freed by United this summer to find new employment. Peter Lovenkrands joined Birmingham on Monday while Danny Guthrie signed for Reading and Jeff Henderson is now with Sligo in Ireland.
