Tim Krul

Tim Krul's Netherlands are on the verge of an early exit from Euro 2012 following a 2-1 Group B defeat to Germany in Kharkiv on Wednesday night.

The United first-choice goalkeeper was an unused substitute for the second game running, and could only watch from the sidelines as a Mario Gomez first-half double put the Germans firmly and deservedly in control at the break.

Prolific Arsenal front man Robin van Persie pulled one back midway through the second half, but the Dutch were unable to salvage anything from the fixture, leaving themselves bottom of the group without a single point from their two matches.

Holland now face a stiff task to make the quarter-finals of the competition. They must beat Portugal on Sunday, hope Germany beat Denmark, and ensure they finish with a better goal difference than the Portuguese and the Danes.

In the other Group B fixture, former Newcastle midfielder Hugo Viana also failed to get off the bench for Portugal, but his country ran out 3-2 winners in a dramatic game against Denmark.
