Sam's Got A Plan

Written by Newcastle Utd

Sammy Ameobi has set his sights on returning for the final few games of the season after stepping up his recovery from injury

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Sammy Ameobi is hoping to boost Newcastle United's European chances by returning to action for the season run-in.

England under-21 ace Ameobi has been sidelined since January after suffering a knee injury in a 50-50 challenge while playing for the Reserves against Wigan.

But the 19-year-old, who made 13 first-team appearances in the first half of the term, has started running at the club's Benton training ground this month as he continues to make good progress in his recovery.

And he now believes he could be back in time to play a part in what promises to be an exciting campaign climax for Alan Pardew's side.

"It's been frustrating for me because I've been out for so long, but to be back out running is a massive thing and hopefully I'll be back soon," he told nufc.co.uk.

"And you never know - I'll try and get a few games before the end of the season.

"I'm really pushing on now so hopefully I'll get back soon."

Ameobi suffered deep bruising to the inside of his left knee and was initially on crutches following the setback which has robbed United of his attacking impact for the past four months.

He added: "We don't want to push it too fast and have a relapse or whatever, so I'm just trying to take it day by day and see where we get to.

"But hopefully I'll get a few games before the end of the season."
