Magpies youngster Alex Gilliead was an unused substitute as England under-16s drew their opening game of the Montaigu Tournament.
The Young Lions needed a last-minute goal from West Bromwich Albion defender Callum Jones to give them a 1-1 scoreline against Japan at the St. Laurent-sur-Sevre Stadium in France. He headed home in stoppage time at the end of the 80 minute match.
Taro Sugimoto had given Japan the lead just seconds earlier, in the 79th minute, as 16-year-old striker Gilliead looked on from the bench.
He was called into the squad for the competition as a late replacement for Derby's Mason Bennett and will hope to play a part in England's next game, against Morocco on Thursday evening.
