Dan Gosling will play for Newcastle's Reserves when they take on Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday night (kick-off 7pm).
The England under-21 midfielder, who has made 12 first-team appearances for the Magpies in all competitions this term, is keen to maintain his match-fitness ahead of the season run-in, and has travelled to Birmingham with Willie Donachie's second-string.
Gosling has played four times for the Reserves this season, scoring three goals.
He is joined by Mehdi Abeid in Donachie's squad. The 20-year-old's elevation to the senior set-up has seen him rarely available to Donachie in recent weeks, but he will make his seventh Barclays Premier Reserve League start of the campaign against the Villans.
Ryan Donaldson and Phil Airey are the only other players to have played first-team football for United, but Michael Richardson is set to make his comeback after two months out with an ankle injury.
Two Academy goalkeepers - Alex Baird and Jonathan Mitchell - will fight it out for the number one jersey. Both have played once previously at this level; Baird made his bow against Ashington in the Sage Northumberland FA Senior Cup while Mitchell played against Manchester City in the league last term.
Scottish youth international Steven Logan and Geordie defender Alex Kitchen have both played for the second-string in friendly matches, but if either of them play against Villa it would be their competitive Reserve team debut.
Admission at Villa Park is £2 for adults and £1 concessions.
The squad is: Alex Baird, Jonathan Mitchell, Patrick Nzuzi, Yven Moyo, Michael Riley, Remie Streete, Jeff Henderson, Alex Kitchen, Steven Logan, Mehdi Abeid, Greg McDermott, Michael Richardson, Ryan Donaldson, Dan Gosling, Phil Airey, Dan Taylor.
