Shay Given

Before Christmas we called upon Newcastle supporters to settle one of the biggest debates at any football club - who would make the all-time Magpies greatest XI?

The task was simple: to choose your greatest side throughout the club's history in a 4-4-2 formation, with the final selection adorning the walls of the Platinum Club at the Sports Direct Arena.

The votes have now been counted and verified and over the next four days, we'll be unveiling who was chosen by you, the fans... starting with our goalkeeper.

Shay Given

Position: Goalkeeper
Signed: 1997
Left club: 2009
Newcastle United appearances: 463

Shay Given is Newcastle United's most capped player and third in the all-time club appearance record listings.

The goalkeeper joined the Magpies from Blackburn in 1997 and quickly made a name for himself as an outstanding shot stopper with fantastic reflexes.

A superb and dedicated player, who trained incredibly hard to reach the top of his profession, Given represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2002 World Cup Finals and, now at Aston Villa, is looking forward to the Euro 2012 Finals this summer.

Log on to on Friday to find out who will line up in Newcastle United's greatest ever defence
