Popular former Newcastle goalkeeper Tommy Wright has become the new assistant manager of St. Johnstone.

The Belfast-born ex-Magpies man had been manager of Lisburn Distillery since September 2009 and will now work under Steve Lomas, who replaced Derek McInnes as the Saints' manager on Thursday.

Wright had two spells at St. James' Park - the first between 1988 and 1993 and the second a loan period in 1999.

He was between the posts during the 11-game winning run at the start of the 1992/93 First Division title-winning season, making a famous save against Bristol Rovers before losing his place to Pavel Srnicek.

McInnes was appointed Bristol City's new manager last month after leading the Saints to fourth in the Scottish Premier League.

Wright played alongside Lomas - previously West Ham's reserve team manager - for Northern Ireland and Manchester City.
