Tiote Cheiks In For Ivory Coast

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle midfielder Cheik Tiote plays for the Ivory Coast in their African Cup of Nations qualifying win over Burundi on Sunday

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Journalist

Cheik Tiote won his 21st international cap for the Ivory Coast on Sunday as they completed their African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 100 per cent record.

The United midfielder was part of the side which beat Burundi 2-1, thanks to goals from Manchester City brothers Kolo and Yaya Toure, and reinforced their place at the top of Group H.

Ivory Coast had already qualified for next year's competition prior to the fixture, but the victory meant they finished 12 points clear at the summit with six wins from six games.

Newcastle striker Demba Ba was not involved for Senegal as they won 2-0 away in Mauritius. Dame N'Doye and Papiss Cisse were on target as they claimed a fifth win in six qualifiers, and ended up five points clear at the top of Group E.
