Mehdi Joins The 'A' Team

Written by Newcastle Utd

French teenager will make his Toon debut at Nottingham Forest - and become first player in the Magpies alphabet

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Mehdi Abeid will become the 1,046th player to represent Newcastle United since the club was formed in 1892 when he makes his competitive debut at Nottingham Forest.

But not only does he join the 'A' team in terms of making his first-team debut - he also becomes an addition to the group of players to figure for the club whose surname begins with the letter.

And he overtakes Clarence Acuna, the Chilean midfielder, as the first player on the club's alphabetical list of all-time players.

Abeid, 19, joined United in the summer from Lens following a successful trial and has impressed so much in the Reserves that he has now been given his chance in the senior squad.

Rob Elliot also makes his first appearance for the Magpies in goal.

Two other players could also make their debuts for Newcastle tonight. Paul Dummett, the former Kenton School pupil, and ex-Coquet High School student Jeff Henderson - both 19 - are both on the bench for the first time at the City Ground.
