Sylvain Marveaux

Sylvain Marveaux makes his competitive debut for Newcastle in tonight's Carling Cup second round tie at Scunthorpe United, in a strong Magpies starting XI.

The Frenchman will start in midfield alongside compatriot Yohan Cabaye, Dan Gosling and Peter Lovenkrands, with Demba Ba and Leon Best up front.

Mike Williamson replaces Steven Taylor in the only change to the backline which has begun each of the first two Barclays Premier League games of the season, while Tim Krul is in goal.

Derby hero Ryan Taylor scored in this stage last season, netting a stunning long-range strike at Accrington before finding the target again at Chelsea in the third round.

Steve Harper has not travelled, as he has a slight knock, so Ole Soderberg is on the bench. Mehdi Abeid is included in a senior squad for the first time while Alan Smith, Steven Taylor, Sammy Ameobi, Shane Ferguson and Haris Vuckic are also substitutes.
