Loan Move For Airey

Written by Newcastle Utd

Phil Airey, Newcastle Reserves' prolific young striker, has joined Scottish Premier League side Hibs on loan

By Dan King - Newcastle United Communications Officer

Phil Airey, last season's top goalscorer for Newcastle Reserves, has signed for Hibernian on a six-month loan.

He links up with former Magpies First-Team Coach Colin Calderwood - now The Hibs manager - at Easter Road having banged in 11 goals in 13 Barclays Premier Reserve League North starts last term.

That earned him the league's golden boot and he has already got off the mark for the current campaign after scoring against Ashington last week, as well as hitting two in a practice match against Middlesbrough Reserves on Monday.

Former Coquet High School pupil Airey, 19, made his senior debut for Newcastle last season against Stevenage in the FA Cup third round in January.

Calderwood's side lost their opening game of the season to Celtic, but beat Inverness 1-0 in their second game and travel to Kilmarnock on Sunday for a game televised live on ESPN, with Airey hoping to make his Scottish Premier League bow.
