Fergie "Gutted" To Be Missing Stateside Tour

Youngster Shane Ferguson talks to nufc.co.uk about missing Newcastle's pre-season tour and his hopes for a speedy return to fitness

By Anthony Marshall

Young defender Shane Ferguson is hoping to be back in action sooner rather than later after being forced to miss Newcastle's Stateside tour with an ankle injury.

The 20-year-old collided with goalkeeper Fraser Forster shortly before half-time in Friday night's friendly at Darlington, and was withdrawn at the interval before having an X-ray on what manager Alan Pardew described post-match as a "serious" knock.

It meant Ferguson did not board the plane bound for America with the rest of the first team squad on Sunday, and the Northern Ireland international will undergo a scan today before hopefully finding out the full extent of the problem.

"It all happened so quickly," he told nufc.co.uk. "I tried to get out of Fraser's way and didn't manage it quick enough. My leg got caught underneath him and it's unfortunate really - just bad timing.

"I knew straight away that something wasn't right, they had a look at me and they think it is the ligaments in my ankle. I'm going for another scan on Tuesday and I'll just see how it is then and how long I'll be out for.

"I'm absolutely gutted (at not going to America). It's the worst timing ever. I've just got to try and get fit now hopefully before the start of the season and if not, then just a little bit after."

Midfielder Danny Guthrie also hobbled off early in the friendly at the Northern Echo Arena with an ankle injury. The 24-year-old had a scan following the match and is undergoing rehab at the Club's Benton-based Training Centre, meaning he is also missing out on the pre-season tour.
