Updated: The Grass Is Almost Greener

Work continuing on the St. James' Park pitch and dugouts ahead of the upcoming 2011/12 campaign
Green shoots of grass on the new-look St. James' Park playing surface should be showing any day soon.
Over the past week the pitch has undergone a rapid facelift, which has seen the top layer of vegetation taken off, cultivated, topped up with 100 tonnes of Fibrelastic - a mix of sand and elastic - re-cultivated, re-levelled and re-seeded.
Remarkably, that process took just a couple of days, and as the Club's ground staff regularly water the surface they are expecting to be able to see the first signs of grass towards the end of the week.
Andy Tully, head groundsman for St. James' Park, said: "It's all gone to plan, like every year. It's the normal set of works that we carry out at the end of each season now.
"We put the pre-seed fertaliser on it last Thursday morning after the seed, and now it's all about just watering and waiting. The first cut will be 10-14 days from then, and you should be able to see green to the eye very soon."
Work is also continuing on the dugouts at St. James' Park, with a completely new structure set to be put in place for the beginning of the 2011/12 season.
