Walton's The Ref For Reds

Written by Newcastle Utd

Peter Walton has been selected to referee Newcastle United's game at Liverpool on Sunday afternoon

By Dan King

Newcastle's trip to Anfield on Sunday will be officiated by experienced whistler Peter Walton.

The 51-year-old from Northamptonshire has yet to take charge of a Magpies match this season, although he has been a familiar face at St. James' Park over the years since he became a Premier League referee in 2003.

He has refereed once at Liverpool already this season - when Wolves stunned The Kop by winning 1-0 back in December, so Alan Pardew will be hoping that's an omen of some kind.

However, his last game involving Newcastle was also on Merseyside; May 2008, when Everton ran out 3-1 winners on the final day of the 2007/08 season.

So far this term, he has shown 94 yellows and eight reds in the 29 games he has taken charge of.

Andy Halliday and Billy Smallwood will be his assistants at Anfield, with Anthony Taylor the fourth official.
