Peter Beardsley believes Newcastle's youngsters have benefited from time out on loan.
Defender James Tavernier and midfielder Ryan Donaldson, both 19, have recently returned from respective spells at Gateshead and Hartlepool.
The duo impressed for United's Reserves as they beat Everton on Tuesday, and second string boss Beardsley was impressed with what he saw.
"Ryan obviously scored the first goal and I thought he did some really good things," he explained.
"He's got the physique that the younger ones need. He's very physically developed, and that shows.
"Tav was outstanding as well, and being out on loan has done them both the world of good.
"It doesn't matter whether it gets them into the first team or not in the next month. Tav's been coming back twice a week so we've seen him develop physically and grow, but Ryan is also a top player.
"He's been good in this team and we thought it was the best thing for him to do. It wouldn't surprise me if he did the same thing again next year.
"With all due respect to him, he's not quite ready for the first team yet, but hopefully he will be soon."
