Viareggio Round-Up: Last 16 Confirmed

Newcastle went into their final Group Eight game against Lecce hoping that a big victory coupled with other results going favourably could see them through to the latter stages, but in the end The Magpies would not have qualified no matter what they did.

After the first set of quaification issues were decided yesterday, the second half of the group stages, Gruppa B, was done and dusted on Saturday. Of the 48 sides who began the tournament, 32 of them, including United, are now out.

Fiorentina qualified as group winners in United's section, but failed to maintain their 100 per cent record. They drew 2-2 with Paraguayans Club Nacional.

Group Seven had an intruiging encounter between Roma and Midtjylland of Denmark, with the winner certain to top the table, but the end result of a 1-1 draw saw the Italians reach the final 16.

The Danes came second with five points while in the other game, Taranto beat Jenistvo 1-0.

In Group Nine, AC Milan finished bottom after a 2-1 defeat to Stabaek. Nagoya Grampus of Japan and Sassuolo both finished with five points after a 1-1 draw, but Nagoya's superior goal difference saw them top the group - and become the only non-Italian team in the knockout stages.

Genoa topped Group Ten after beating Nordsjaelland 3-0, while Parma's 2-1 win over Citta Marino Calcio saw them also qualify as one of the best runners up - they had six points.

Prato were the other side to progress as runners-up as they emerged from Group Eleven despite losing 2-1 to group winners Palermo, who finished with maximum points. Emergence Brera Gabon won 2-0 against Lumezzane.

And in Group Twelve, Siena and Kallon drew 1-1, as did Napoli and Spezia, meaning Siena went through.

So the last 16 of the Torneo di Viareggio is: Varese, Juventus, Atalanta, Lazio, Inter Milan, Representatives of Serie D, Reggina, Sampdoria, Roma, Fiorentina, Nagoya Grampus, Genoa, Parma, Palermo, Prato and Siena.
