Best Eyeing Toon Return

Striker Leon Best reveals how he is getting ever closer to returning to action following his untimely ankle injury

By Dan King

Leon Best is hoping to return to training next week following the ankle injury which has so far ruled him out for the season.

The former Coventry striker suffered a ruptured ankle ligament in training on the eve of the new campaign, and still felt some discomfort when he briefly resumed training last month.

But now Best believes he is over the injury and is looking forward to getting back onto the training pitch before fighting for a place in the Newcastle side.

The 24-year-old told www.nufc.co.uk: "I've had an injection at the back of my ankle and I was out running on Tuesday for a little bit - and it felt good. The injury wasn't on my mind at all and now I'm aiming to train sometime next week."

It was a cruel blow for Best when he suffered the injury, as he had scored two goals in pre-season - against Carlisle and PSV - and was full of confidence ahead of the new campaign.

He added: "I was devastated, because I'd started pre-season well and scored a couple of goals, but you just have to get on with it. These things happen in life and you've got to keep on going.

"I'm still here and still breathing, so I've just got to put it behind me and get fit again.

"I still need to prove myself and I've not done it yet. Hopefully, given the chance, I will do. Every time I see the fans in the street, they ask me how I'm getting on and wish me well on getting back playing soon, which keeps me going.

"That's the kind of thing I need to get back and get my confidence up, and get scoring goals."
