Newcastle United Foundation is tackling the health issues that men suffer through an initiative called Premier League Health.

The scheme, funded by the New Football Pools, NHS North East and National Social Marketing Centre, is working with local dads to help them become more fit and healthy.

The fact remains that English males have a major problem with the poor state of their health and men still have a lower life expectancy than women (77, compared with 81).

Community Health Trainers Iqbal Ahmed and Stephen Hutchinson are working in the West End of Newcastle and Ashington respectively to encourage dads to play more sport, stop smoking and lose weight. They also point them who take part in the direction of other agencies that might be able to help improve their health. Over 100 dads have taken part in the project to date and are already seeing the benefits.

Iqbal and Stephen are running regular football sessions at Westgate Centre for Sport in Newcastle and Hirst Welfare Centre in Ashington. To find out more or to join in contact:
