PETER Lovenkrands was disappointed that his first away goal of the season did not fire Newcastle United to victory during Saturday's Tyne-Tees derby at the Riverside Stadium.

The Dane handed the visitors a 16th-minute lead when he latched onto Jonas Gutierrez's defence-splitting slip before drilling low past Danny Coyne.

But that opener was eclipsed by efforts from former Celtic schemers Barry Robson and Scott McDonald, only for Andy Carroll to save the day with a late strike.

And Lovenkrands said: "It was a great start for us with my goal and we should have gone on from there.

"It was a brilliant ball from Jonas and that is something him and I have spoken about. Quite a few times now we've linked up well with those little passes in behind the defence because he knows I'll be there.

"Thankfully again it has come off and I was delighted to get my first away goal.

"It gave us the perfect start but we didn't really kick on from there and allowed Middlesbrough back into the game.

"To then go behind was a huge blow but the boys hung in and I wasn't surprised when Big Andy got the equaliser.

"We've shown so many times this season that we never give in and because of that we deserved the point."
