Toon Top Premier Form Chart
Written by Newcastle Utd
Four wins in five means Keegan's Magpies are top flight team of the moment
By Craig Hope |
HAVING dropped just two points during their last five matches, Kevin Keegan's Newcastle United now sit proudly atop the Premier League form chart.
It has been a stunning upturn in fortunes for the Magpies after a previous run of three months without victory had seen them dragged into a relegation scrap at the foot of the table.
But any talk of demotion is now a thing of the past with KK instead setting his sights on leapfrogging Carling Cup winners Tottenham Hotspur and next weekend's opponents West Ham.
Only title-chasing Chelsea have matched the Geordie in their previous five, but Avram Grant's Blues have to settle for second-place because of their inferior goal difference.
Here's how the form table looks (last five Premier League matches)
Newcastle United | 13 (points) |
Chelsea | 13 |
Manchester United | 11 |
Liverpool | 10 |
Aston Villa | 9 |
Sunderland | 9 |
Arsenal | 7 |
Portsmouth | 7 |
Man City | 7 |
Bolton | 7 |
Tottenham Hotspur | 6 |
Blackburn Rovers | 6 |
Everton | 5 |
Middlesbrough | 5 |
Wigan Athletic | 5 |
West Ham | 4 |
Fulham | 4 |
Birmingham City | 4 |
Reading | 4 |
Derby County | 1 |
And here's a little reminder of how we picked up those points ...
Fulham (H) 2-0 ... Mark Viduka fires first-half opener before Michael Owen adds a second after the break
Spurs (A) 4-1 ... Trailing to a Darren Bent header, Nicky Butt levels the score right on the stroke half-time before Geremi, Owen and Oba Martins complete the rout after the interval
Reading (H) 3-0 ... United's three-pronged attack of Viduka, Owen and Martins each get their name on the scoresheet as Steve Coppell's Royals are swept aside at St.James' Park
Portsmouth (A) 0-0 ... A well-earned draw on the South Coast with skipper Owen coming within inches of grabbing a second-half winner
Sunderland (H) 2-0 ... Magic Michael makes it six goals in six games with a memorable brace against the Black Cats
