KEVIN Keegan has vowed to give Newcastle United supporters "something worth watching" as he sets out on what is sure to be a roller-coaster third spell on Tyneside.

King Kev came within a whisker of lifting the title with the Magpies back in 1996 only to see Man Utd pip them at the post having wiped out the Geordies' 12-point lead.

But, having come so close once before, Special K sees no reason why he can't go one step better and end United's 39-year wait for silverware.

"I want to win something and I want to give supporters what they want," said the new Toon boss.

"I was impressed with Mike Ashley because I asked him what he wanted and he said he wants to win things.

"It is possible for this club to break into the top four or to win a Carling Cup or an FA Cup.

"We have done it before.

"When we came up last time I said to Alex Ferguson, 'Watch out, we're after your title'.

"But we all know we nearly achieved that."

And Keegan says that he wants to give the Toon Army something to shout about having been famed for his fast-flowing, attacking brand of football during his last spell at St.James' Park.

"When the fans have worked all week they come to the match and it's like people down south going to the theatre," he added.

"They want to see something that's worth seeing and they want to enjoy it.

"I want them to go home thinking that was good.

"They want us to have a go and that's why I'm here - we will have a go.

"But there's only one place we can do that and that's out there on the pitch."
