LEE Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate were both named in the starting line up against their former club as Newcastle opened their Premiership season against Leeds at Elland Road.
Bowyer came in at the expense of Nobby Solano, who dropped to the bench, while the only other change from the team that won in Belgrade saw Aaron Hughes replace Andy Griffin at right back.
Leeds boss Peter Reid included two former United players, David Batty and Didier Domi, on the bench.
When the teams were announced before kick off, Woodgate was afforded warm applause - but Bowyer's reception was rather less welcoming.
Alan Smith and Laurent Robert both saw long range drives go well wide in the opening two minutes of the game, then on five minutes Leeds won a left wing corner but Kelly's inswinger was cleared.
On 12 minutes Bellamy fed Robert with a clever ball down the left channel, but the Frenchman's cross fell behind Shearer and the chance went begging.
At the other end Sakho's cross fell to Smith 10 yards out, but the England striker's effort flew inton the travelling fans behind the goal, then Bowyer fired over from 16 yards after Robert's corner.
Smith went close with a clever effort on 16 minutes when he cushioned the ball on his knee with his back to goal then tried his luck with a looping effort that drifted just wide of Given's left hand post.
On 19 minutes Radebe's foul on Dyer saw referee Wiley point to ther spot, and
Shearer made no mustake from the spot to put Newcastle 1-0 up.
But five minutes later Leeds were level. Speed lost possession in midfield and the ball was picked up by Sakho, and he fed
Viduka who drilled the ball into the bottom corner.
Leeds were buoyed by the goal and Radabe dragged a shot wide moments after they levelled, while at the other end Bellamy's strike from an acute angle was blocked by Robinson when Robert was in space at the back post.
Seth Johnson was booked on 35 minutes for a lunge at Bowyer, joining team-mate Wilcox who was cautioned 15 minutes earlier for a foul on Robert.
On 38 minutes Robert saw a powerful 25 yard drive pushed away for a corner, but Bowyer's flag kick drifted across the box and was cleared by Kelly.
On 41 minutes Woodgate was relieved to see the referee produce a yellow card rather than red when he fouled Sakho on the edge of the box with the Leeds fans baying for a dismissal, and thankfully for United the free kick was drilled straight at the wall and then cleared.
Bernard required treatment five minutes into the second period after a foul by Smith on the far touchline, though the full back was able to continue after running off the knock on the sidelines.
Bellamy and Johnson were given a talking to following an exchange of views on 53 minutes, then the Welsh striker was involved in a tangle with masttoe moments later which once again saw the referee intervene.
On 57 minutes, leeds took the lead when Bernard's backpass to Given fell short, and
Smith nipped in to slot the ball under Given.
Two minutes later Domi was given a taste of the action against his old club when he replaced Sakho.
Robert saw two long range efforts fly over as United tried to get back into the game, then after Morris was booked for a foul on Hughes, Domi joined him in the book for clattering into Bowyer.
On 72 minutes Sir Bobby made a double change, replacing Bowyer and Bernard with Ameobi and Jenas. Speed went to left back, with Jenas slotting into the centre of the park. At the same time, Leeds put Batty on for Wilcox.
Jenas had the ball in the net with his first touch when he got on the end of Dyer's cross, but the linesman had his flag up.
Robinson made a flying save to push out Shearer's header from bellamy's cross, but when the ball bounced back into the danger area there was no United player in the area to get the vital touch.
Leeds had another let off on 82 minutes when Shearer's header from Hughes cross was hooked away by Radebe when Jenas on the back post looked a certain scorer.
With seven minutes remaining, United made their third and final change by replacing Robert with Nobby Solano.
A good counter attack following a Leeds corner saw Ameobi bring the ball out of defence and feed Ballmy down the left wing, but when his cross was half cleared Dyer saw an attempted lob sail well off target.
With three minutes remaining, United got back on level terms and it was that man
Shearer with the goal
. Solano played a short free kick to Hughes, and when the Irishman crosed the ball Camara's weak header fell into the path of the number nine and he made no mistake.
Four minutes of stoppage time were signalled by the fourth official, and while United finsihed strongly they had to settle for a share of the spoils.
