Norman Smith (1961-62)
NEWBURN-born Norman was Stan Seymour's assistant from 1938, and gave the club sterling service right through their glory era in the 1950s.
His loyalty was rewarded in 1961 when he was given the top job on a temporary basis following Charlie Mitten's sacking.
His time with United came to an end when Joe Harvey arrived however a year later, and he chose to retire from the game.
Norman died suddenly in 1978, ironically on his way home from St. James' after watching a game.
